Painting 1 Pieces - Fall '23
Woo, what a semester! These are all of the pieces I made during my Painting I class. I had a ton of fun doing all of them, and enjoyed the challenge of working in new mediums. I'd never really worked in oil paint, and I rarely do digital paintings. I liked the different requirements for each assignment, as they pushed me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to tackle subjects I likely wouldn't on my own.
Very excited to do much more painting in the future!
Edit: Since this was posted, "Stewart, Peering" got into the Rising Eyes of Texas art show in Rockport! Very exciting, looking forward to letting the world see the little fella.
"Sunshine", digital. This was an identity self-portrait using ambiguous space. Done in photoshop.
Acrylic on hand-gessoed board. The goal was to maintain flat space by utilizing color theory and value contrast to avoid depth in the piece. We were using diagrams to inspire our designs, but the composition and overall choices were our own.
Stewart, oil on canvas. The goal of this piece was exact color-matching. Our professor had us select children's toys to paint, since they have bright fun colors. I chose this little Duplo guy!
Stewart himself (I used both a printed reference as well as a digital reference for the piece, so the colors varied slightly).
This was an experimental piece to get us used to working with oils. We were supposed to use every technique available to us, from washes to impasto. Pretty fun, spent maybe an hour on it.
Same concept as the previous piece, but with acrylics instead of oils.
Limited palette still-life, oil on canvas. I call it Vegetable Oil :)
The goal here was to use a limited palette of white, black, burnt umber, and burnt sienna to create a convincing illusion of space.
We set up our own still-life for this piece. This is a different angle than what I painted from, as this was a reference for the positioning of all the objects, not the painting itself. We painted from life.
We did a few short watercolor pieces, and this one was my favorite. Emphasis on atmospheric perspective.
Fear, acrylic and mixed medium on canvas. The goal of this piece was to convey fear through color.
